Chrysis taczanovskii?

Postby Ian Cross » 01 Jul 2016 09:51

Is this distinctive Chrysis, with the brow ridge curved round to enclose the foremost ocellus, definitely taczanovskii?

Or are there other species with this appearance?

This one comes from the Algarve in Portugal.

Very pretty! Can we have a lateral & dorsal images? A picture of the teeth on the apical rim (last tergite) from above wouldn't be amiss either ;)
Its most likely not C. taczanovskii they should not be this coloured in my experience and the head doesn't really have the right shape, that species should have a very broad face beneath the eyes. This kind of "enclosed middle ocellus" occurs in many places in Chrysidini, and in different Chrysis species groups.

Hi Ian,

it's Pseudospinolia incrassata and it seems the red subspecies described by Linsenmaier (1997) as P. incrassata paris, known from Portugal, S Spain and S France.

Based from your first picture of the head, you can see that the mouthparts are very elongated and this is a diagnostic character which is unusual for Chrysis, more important that the shape of TFC.

Cheers
Paolo
