Chrysis with mesonotum medially almost black

Postby EMMERY » 11 Nov 2020 18:25

Hello,
I observed this Chrysis of 9 mm on 18 July 2020 at an altitude of 1145 m on the trail that goes from Casset to Le Bourg on a sunny slope (La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar, Hautes-Alpes FR05). I noticed that the middle part of the mesonotum is almost black and the apical rim of T3 is dark blue-purple. Could it be Chrysis graelsii ?
Thanks ! Best regards.

this should be Chrysis analis, perhaps it is not usually this dark, but chrysidids often become darker with higher altitude (or latitude for that matter)

Thank you for your reply.
What are the criteria differentiating Chrysis analis from Chrysis graelsii?

Chrysis analis (& simplonica) have a smaller transversal frontal carina than graelsi (& valesiana) ;
malar space is inexistant in graelsi (small but distinct in analis & simplonica) ;
an other criterium is the lenght of 1st & 2nd flagellomeres ; (F I is longer in analis than in graelsii if I remember).
puncture of tergum II is different ; analis is more slender than graelsii.

Chrysis analis is commoner (in my region Franche-Comté, east of France), on dry calcarous grassland, end-may to july.
