[Chrysura rufiventris]

Postby Frank_Canon » 02 Jun 2021 05:59

Hello all,

The season starts so I have many new species to ID ; of course I do my best but it is not always enough ! :D

So the first one is a new species for me, found in Normandy, France, on the beach (maritime cliff). I thought it was Pseudospinolia neglecta from the shape but the vein seems to reach the wing margin...

So I guess it could be Chrysura hirsuta (long hair on T3) but Im not 100% sure. Thanks in advance :)

Hi Frank,

no comment on the low quality of your pictures

Ok, this is Chrysura rufiventris.
You can separate this species from Chrysura hirsuta by:
- apical margin of the abdomen (apical margin of 3rd metasomal tergum) downcurved (vs straight in C. hirsuta)
- small and subrectangular black spots on second metasomal sternum (vs large, elongate and ovoid in C. hirsuta)
- abdomen without long and thick bristles (with sparse black and long bristles in C. hirsuta)
- metanotum subconical (vs convex)

Nice finding, in a few years it will arrive in UK ;-)
Cheers
