Chrysidid in amber | Criside in ambra

Postby Gian Luca Agnoli » 22 Jan 2011 18:36

Image Eric Geirnaert (http://ambre.jaune.free.fr), author of the book "L'AMBRE, MIEL DE FORTUNE ET MEMOIRE DE VIE" (2004), gives the announcement of the discovery of a new Chrysidid included in amber. The discovery of such insects is extremely rare and only few species are known. The attached photo is unclear, but shows some significant morphological characters, such as a large metanotal projection and a strong swelling of the apical abdominal segments. A new Genus? I'll try to write to the author for more photos...

Hi!

To me it looks like a member of the Chrysis lincea species group, also referred as the genus Pyria. In fact it looks like Chrysis gheudei Guérin, 1842, even the spot at the side of second metasomal tergum is visible in this photo cropped from the compilation of photos from this web page:

You can check out the Chrysis gheudei here:

After all both (Chrysis gheudei and the specimen in amber) come from Madagascar.
