Mating behaviour

Postby sitomeli » 14 Sep 2012 14:02

Hello everybody
Little is known about the mating behaviour of Chrysididae. Since several species like to land frequently on wooden needles, stumps or dead trees and branches it was assumed that also mating take place there. Last May I was lucky to take pictures of pairs of Chrysis gracillima and Chrysis viridula on a wooden needle, verifying the hypothesis
Best regards
Rudolf

Dear Rudolf,

thank you very much for sharing your fantastic pictures with us!!!
They are really super! In 20 years I saw only once two Chrysidids in copula.
It's extremely rare to admire these pics.
Since it is uncommon to see Chrysidids in copula, I assumed that they probably copulate while they are flying.

Thank you very much again and congratulations for the beautiful pictures!!! :ok:

Cheers
Paolo
