Chrysis splendidula Rossi, 1790 - Zakynthos (Greece)

Postby pietsje » 10 Jul 2013 17:33

I found this one, today 10/7/13 on Daucus carota. Rather large, about 6-7mm, I'm not sure. Maybe Chrysis analis?

I think C. analis only have the T3 blue posteriorly of the pit row (i.e. only the "apical teeth"), this looks more like Chrysis splendidula to me (from pictures on this website), but maybe that species is not broad enough. This specimen looks very broad to me, but it could be the angle.

Only a guess though...

Thanks Alex, it was a very robust, broad species. And indeed I compared it with C. analis from Italy and it looks totally different. Thanks for the suggestion of C. splendidula!

Been thinking about this specimen, I thought I had seen some pictures of a similar animal somewhere - then I remembered Chrysis maroccana, Mocsary 1883, which at least to me looks similar. Although Fauna Europea does not list it as occuring in the Greek archipelago, maybe its more wide spread, or it could be a sister species, or I could be completely wrong ;)

Alex, thanks for all your thinking ;) I will keep it on C. marroccana. I have the impression that Fauna Europaea is not up to date. It's a hell of a job anyway so understandable.

Hi,

it's surely splendidula because it's the only one with the special margin at the end of T-II. No other species in this group have this character.

About C. maroccana Mocsary.
I searched for the type, which can be considered lost.
Linsenmaier first described abdominata, and later he put it in synonym with maroccana without type examination. Therefore I'm not even sure that maroccana is present in Europe!
In Italy we have at least 5 new species in this group (see other previous posts) and I'm trying to put all the known species in order. Moreover there are old names which have priority on the names that we are using in Fauna Eur.

At the moment I confirm C. splendidula.
Cheers
Paolo
