Holopyga fervida or ignicollis ? male

Postby Frank_Canon » 19 Jun 2022 16:03

Hello, I found back a picture of this individual found in July 2020, Eastern France.

I though it to be H. fervida but I'm not 100% sure as the scutellum seems to be half deep blue without golden reflection... much more than in my other specimens.

But I guess the head is also deep blue for H. ignicollis, so that doesn't match?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Frank,

your first guess was correct :D
based on the punctation of the scutellum I would say Holopyga fervida.
Males of this species are extremely polymorphic, meaning that their coloration can vary greatly.
Moreover, I think that this is complex of species (see the case discussed by Rosa & Pavesi 2021 on Holopyga gogorzae).

Reminder: the name H.ignicollis has changed. It is synonym of H. chrysonota.
H. chrysonota (sensu Linsenmaier 1959) is now H. similis Mocsary, 1889 (basically the same systematic approach given by Mocsary (1889)).

Cheers
Paolo

Many thanks for your detailed answer Paolo. Actually I knew there were some changes to make in the taxonomy of Holopyga, but I was not aware about the new names, apparently I missed your paper, shame :wow:
